Phone Arena reports today that Best Buy is having a sale on iTunes gift cards, obviously trying to snare yet more customers before Christmas! According to the report, Best Buy is offering $100 iTunes gift cards for just $85, and they?ve even waived the shipping costs for you too. Best Buy guarantees that if ordered by the date that they specify, the voucher will be with you, or the person that you?re buying it for, in time for Christmas. Just one word of warning though! The deal is for today only, and it is an online exclusive, so don?t expect to be able to order one at your local store, although Phone Arena points out that the gift card is available to order online for in-store pick up. Also worth noting is the fact that the offer is limited to one gift card per customer, and it?s also possible that the offer may sell out, as there are only limited cards available.

The Daily Mail reports today that Google Maps has already been a staggering success, with more than 10 million copies downloaded in the past 48 hours since the app appeared in the App Store, taking it straight to the top of the iTunes charts. The stunning tally was announced by Google?s Jeff Huber, who said: ?We?re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world.? Huber went on to congratulate the Google Maps Team ?for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.? The Daily Mail says that Google?s engineers had already begun working on the new Maps app even before Apple announced on September 19 of this year that it would be replacing Google Maps in iOS with its own in-house, and, as it turns out, ill-fated, iOS Maps app. The new Google Maps app includes several new features, such as turn-by-turn directions, but it does not yet include other Android-exclusive features, such as in-building directions in places such as malls.

AppleInsider writes that YouTube has just launched its own Instagram-like video capture app, called Capture (of course!), which lets you shoot, edit and post links to videos on YouTube. YouTube says that Capture is made to be speedy and easy to use, giving the user immediate access to their camera once they have signed in to their YouTube account (which you must have in order to use the app). Once you have shot your video footage, you can then tweak it in various ways before uploading it, including using colour correction, stabilization and trimming. You also get the option to add background music via YouTube Soundtracks. AppleInsider notes that the app only records in landscape mode, thus preventing unsuitably-sized portrait-mode videos being uploaded. One particularly useful aspect of this app, which actually does not appear in Apple?s own in-house Camera app, is the ability to post YouTube links to Google+, Twitter and Facebook all at the same time. Very handy! You can also choose to keep the video unlisted and only show it to those people that you want to see it, or upload it to private feeds.

TUAW reports that Apple has just updated its annual 12 Days of Christmas app ready for this year?s festivities to begin. Although the app doesn?t actually start in earnest until December 26, which is traditionally the first of the 12 days of Christmas, and the first day that Apple will send you a nice little gift from iTunes if you have the app installed, they have kicked off early with a free Rod Stewart Christmas song, Let it Snow, today. Each gift will be available to download for a full 24 hours, and it could be a book, a game, a song, anything that might be found in the App Store or iTunes. The good thing about the whole 12 Days of Christmas campaign is that you don?t even have to have the app downloaded to benefit. All the free items will be available to all for the full 24 hours. Only downside of the app is that it is not available in the US.

Earlier this month, Apple launched the iTunes Store in 56 new locations across the world. Now, Cupertino has started renting and selling movies via 42 of these freshly opened stores. Here are the countries from which you can purchase your favorite films from:
Europe: Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine
Africa, the Middle East and India: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Botswana, Cape Verde, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, India, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Arab Emirates, Uganda and Zimbabwe
Asia Pacific: Indonesia, Micronesia, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan
Latin America and the Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago
Nevertheless, in some locations such as South Africa, we are presented only with options coming from companies like Disney or Sony. Other stores don’t offer rentals for HD movies yet. So far, there’s no information when the remaining 14 countries will gain access to the same movie features. The delay is probably related to issues around getting licenses with movie studios in order, so it will probably happen soon.
Apple is actively increasing its presence all over the globe, courtesy of its music stores and now manages to reach 60.96% of the entire world population. Even Microsoft and its popular operating system, Windows, didn’t manage to such a performance, managing to attract only 16% of the world population. Google comes in at number three with a tiny 4.47%.

According to a report on AppleInsider today, Twitter has worked quickly to replace the integrated viewing of Instagram photos in the app, which was yesterday pulled from Twitter by Facebook Instagram, by installing its own image filters, among other things. The official Twitter blog said that the image effects were created by photo-editing software firm, Aviary. There are eight filters in total, namely, vignette, black & white, warm, cool, vintage, cinematic, happy, and gritty. Just as with Instagram, you use the filters after first taking a picture via the app, then choosing a filter, either by tapping on a preview in the grid view, or by swiping through the different filters one by one. The image editor also enables you to crop and one-touch auto-enhance your photos, in a very similar way to Apple?s Photos app. AppleInsider says that the cropping tool will either keep the original aspect ratio, or change the photo to an Instagram-style square that can be easily viewed on your Twitter timeline.

Google has launched a new version of its popular Gmail iOS app, and announced it in a post on the Official Gmail Blog, explaining that it has taken the team six months to ?completely rebuild? the iOS app, with the aim of making it ?faster, sleeker, and easier? to use. Google is calling the app ?version 2.0?, and says that it has completely new look and feel, as well as various other improvements, including profile pictures in messages, lots of new animations, including swivels and transitions, plus infinite scrolling in the messages list. Google says that there are also a lot of new time-saving features in the app, including autocomplete predictions appearing as you type when you search. You can also now use the app to RSVP to Google Calendar invites, and +1 and comment on Google+ posts without leaving the app. One other feature introduced in Gmail 2.0 that is bound to be very popular is support for multiple accounts, with the user now being able to login to up to five Google Accounts via the menu, and quickly and easily switch between them.

For those of us still soldiering away with our first-gen iPads, this news story might be a bit puzzling, as we still have a YouTube app on our iOS6-less classic old iPads! However, for anyone else, and I?m guessing that?s most of you, the news on AppleInsider today that Google has released its own standalone YouTube app for iPad to replace the one that was dumped by iOS 6 will be very welcome indeed. The app was originally released for iPhone and iPod touch back in September, on the eve of the launch of iOS 6, but that version was not compatible with iPad. This new, iPad-friendly version of the app also brings in iPhone 5 and AirPlay support. In particular, the iPhone 5 support means that you will no longer see the black ?handlebars? in landscape mode when you are watching videos. The app also has several other minor tweaks, such as adding the ability to add and remove video from your playlists, and improved accessibility with VoiceOver.

9to5 Mac reports today that Apple has made a change to its iTunes gift cards just in time for the holiday season! Previously, you could only buy cards for certain set amounts, also starting at $15. Now you can pre-load the card with any amount from $15-$500 by taking them to the cashier and asking them to load up the card with the amount that you choose. When the cashier validates the card, the amount that you have paid is assigned a code, which the person that you are giving the gift card to can redeem in the iTunes store, either via the usual method, or also via FaceTime Camera scan. 9to5 Mac says that these new gift cards will be sold in supermarket chains and other electrical goods stores, as well as Apple Stores, presumably. The card is currently not available online. This is clearly a very helpful move by Apple, giving the consumer more choice, but I only wish they would lower the minimum amount to something smaller, at least $10, or maybe even $5, for people who want to buy a smaller gift.
