Archos introduces the 97 Titanium tablet, with a high resolution display and Jelly Bean

Android Central

Archos has quietly introduced their latest Android tablet, the 97 Titanium. Part of their elements series, the 97 refers to the 9.7 inch display. Spec wise, the 97 Titanium is a pretty impressive piece of equipment.

The 9.7 inch IPS display has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 with a PPI of 264. That's iPad 4 territory right there. Underneath, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean runs over a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, but only 8GB of on-board storage. It is expandable however via microSD card, and Archos claims 64GB cards are supported with no worries. Camera wise, there's a 5MP shooter on the rear, and a 2MP front facer.

Commendably, Archos is running what looks to be a straight up, vanilla version of Jelly Bean. Instead of the screen layout we see on the Nexus 10 though, Archos has gone for what we would traditionally think of from an Android tablet. The 97 Titanium isn't the plastic hell we might possibly expect either. The casing on the rear is constructed from Aluminum, and the thickness is kept down to just 9mm.

It isn't up for sale yet, nor do we know just when and where it will be, or how much it will cost. Archos has released a number of Android devices in the past, but rarely made a compelling case for purchase. This one could be a different story. For those looking for a stock experience, oodles of storage and a killer display, the 97 Titanium could meet some needs.

The 2048pixels website offers high resolution wallpapers for the Retina iPad

After Apple launched the Retina enabled iPad, the task of finding appropriate and aesthetically pleasing wallpaper for your tablet proved to be more and more difficult. This is not the case anymore, as this week the 2048pixels website was launched, providing artsy tablet users with high resolution artwork perfect for the improved capabilities of the new iPad.

The art available on 2048pixel has been designed by some of the most talented digital artists working today. Additionally, the site can also be seen as a platform for struggling artists who are trying to make it. What?s special about this website is that it was created strictly for the Retina Display. The interface turns out to be very intuitive as users can swipe right to left or left to right in order to browse the materials present on the website. When something that is liked is found, a simple tapping will showcase the full wallpaper. On this page, one will find a button for downloading the art and a button for social media sharing.

Another interesting feature the website offers is that users can customize the experience. Art lovers will be able to modify the available themes. One example is that you can change color depth or luminosity. Textures and effects can also be added so users can enhance the appearance of the chosen theme to their own liking.

To be kept up to date with the gorgeous themes uploaded daily to the website, users can subscribe to the site?s RSS feed as well.

High Speed 4G LTE Could Soon Be Arriving in the UK

High speed 4G LTE mobile services may have take their sweet time getting to the UK, but judging by a new press release from Ofcom today, as reported on by TechCrunch, the UK could finally be getting the super fast services. According to Ofcom, which is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industry, it plans to hold an auction of spectrum, the largest ever, no less, for mobile services in the UK by the end of 2012. According to Ofcom, this would then lay ?the path for next-generation 4G networks to be rolled out next year.? Ofcom says that ?the auction will offer the equivalent of three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use today? which is 80% more than was released in the 3G auction in 2000. Ofcom goes on to spell out what many UK iPhone and iPad owners have been hoping for, i.e., that mobile broadband will be rolling out to at least 98% of people all across the UK, via 4G, ?the fourth generation of mobile technology, which will deliver much faster mobile data speeds to phones and other wireless devices than presently possible.? The press release goes on to say that Ofcom will also be reserve some of the available spectrum for a fourth national wholesaler aside from big three mobile carriers in the UK, namely Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2.

Quote:

Ed Richards, Ofcom Chief Executive, said: ?The 4G auction has been designed to deliver the maximum possible benefit to consumers and citizens across the UK.
?As a direct result of the measures Ofcom is introducing, consumers will be able to surf the web, stream videos and download email attachments on their mobile device from almost every home in the UK.?

Success of New iPad Puts IGZO Screens in High Demand

Digitimes reports that the success of the latest iPad has lead to a greatly increased demand for IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) panels. Digitimes says that according to industry sources, panel makers are starting to shift their focus to IGZO technology, as it is able to provide LCD screens with lower energy consumption thanks to its smaller, thin-film transistors (TFTs) and greater pixel transparency. Digitimes says that the technology also has higher electron mobility, enabling more current to pass through the TFTs, and therefore bringing more illumination capabilities. Digitimes notes that by focusing on producing IGZO panels, as well as similar types of panels, such as LTPS, AMOLED, and flexible displays, they are increasing demand for these new technologies, which could provoke a price war among the panel makers. The report goes on to say that panel makers are expected to start either creating new product lines or changing their existing product lines to IGZO by the end of 2012. Digitimes also says that in June, Sharp shipped around 100, 000 IGZO panels, with that figure expected to rise to 200,000 in July. Sharp will also be expanding its IGZO panel production by building a new plant in Guishan, southern China, doubtless to compete with the current demand.

High Stakes in Internet Tracking

Will “Do Not Track” kill off innovation along with targeted advertising?

An Amazon ad for a book by science fiction writer Cory Doctorow recently appeared on my computer screen. “What a coincidence!” I thought naively. I’d been reading an opinion item by Doctorow on Internet privacy (to be published this week as part of this month’s Business Impact series) and had looked up his past writing. That was all it took for a crowd of ads to start following me.

Samsung Galaxy S III scores high in unofficial battery life tests

Samsung Galaxy S III scores high in unofficial battery life tests

The Samsung Galaxy S III has a lot of things to like and some specifications that fell short of expectations for the heavily hyped device. One area that the Galaxy S III is likely to meet or exceed expectations is battery, according to unofficial tests performed by GSM Arena.

GSM Arena performed a few tests on the Galaxy S III to gauge performance and it discovered that Samsung’s flagship phone does a solid to good job in some regards. The Galaxy S III ranked 4th in talk time, 14th in web browsing, and 2nd in video playback. The device delivered 10 hours and 20 minutes of 3G talk time, 5 hours and 17 minutes of web browsing, and 10 hours and 1 minute of video playback.

These tests, while encouraging, don’t tell the whole story. These tests were performed on the GSM i9300 GS III that has a 2100 mAh battery and an Exynos quad-core processor. These results could be different depending on network performance in your local area, and a change in settings and conditions that apply to how people use their phones in the real world. It’s also important to note that users in the United States should probably disregard these tests completely because the GS III variants that come to the U.S. are likely to have Qualcomm chipsets in place of Exynos.

The Droid Razr Maxx outpaces all phones in practically every regard, which shouldn’t surprise anyone anymore. However, the GS III held its own in some key gauges. Use this as an indicator of what might be possible, not a definitive prediction of what you’ll experience once you get your hands on the Galaxy S III. Visit GSM Arena to see the full results.
