HTC and Playstation Mobile offer free games for Sense 4+ phones

Cubixx

If you have an HTC Sense 4+ phone, HTC and Playstation Mobile want to give you a free game every week through the end of February. Much like the offer for free games on Sony devices, there are no hoops to jump through, just download the Playstation Mobile for Android app, set up your Sony Entertainment Network account, then use your Sense 4+ phone to download your free games. Supported models include:

  • HTC One V
  • HTC One S
  • HTC One X
  • HTC One XL
  • HTC One EVO 4G LTE
  • HTC One X+

There is one sticking point — your phone must be running Android 4.1 and Sense 4+ or higher, which leaves folks on AT&T and T-Mobile out in the cold unless they've rooted and ROM'd. Feel free to express your distaste in the comments.

This week's free game is Cubixx, and HTC reminds us all to check every week for a new game. See the source link for the full details.

All Halfbrick Games Are Free For 24 Hours, Including Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride

Some of my favourite iOS games hail from Australian developers Halfbrick, in particular Jetpack Joyride, Monster Dash and Age of Zombies, featuring the legendary hero, Barry Steakfries, as well as the incredibly successful Fruit Ninja. Now, for one day only, Halfbrick has decided to give away all, yes all, of its iOS games for free, making this the first time ever that Fruit Ninja, in particular, has been available for free. The giveaway lasts until 6 a.m. GMT on Tuesday, December 17, and is worldwide. It includes not just the iPhone games but also the HD iPad versions.

Quote:

?This is by far the biggest sale we?ve ever had,? said Phil Larsen, Chief Marketing Officer at Halfbrick. ?Over the past three years we?ve given everything we have to make our games the best, and were rewarded a million times over with love and support from our fans. Now it?s time to give something back, kick some ass and start 2013 with more momentum than ever. Have a blast playing Halfbrick?s finest!?

Skylanders Cloud Patrol Free for Limited Time

It certainly does seem to be a great week for free games, with Free App A Day currently sponsoring Skylander Cloud Patrol as a free download from the App Store. This incredibly popular game from Activision is another way for fans of the Skylanders franchise to play as their favourite characters from the series, which was the number one kids game of 2011. Skylanders Cloud Patrol features more than 30 characters from Skylanders Spyro?s Adventure, and is set in a new region of Skylands that has been overrun by the evil minions of Portal Master, Kaos. The player gets to take command of a mighty sky-ship and use their favourite Skylander to take on the baddies either by tapping and shooting or swiping the screen for awesome combos. You can also use the code bundled with your real-life Skylanders action figures to unlock Skylanders and Magic Items in the iOS game.

Quote:

?Skylanders is already a huge success both on consoles and the web with Skylanders Spyro?s Adventure and Skylanders Spyro?s UniverseSM and we are excited to bring the franchise to the mobile platform,? said John Coyne, Vice President, Consumer Marketing. ?Now with Cloud Patrol, fans have a brand new way to interact with their favourite Skylanders? characters on the go and in a new fun form of gameplay.?

Android piracy forced Dead Trigger to become a free game

Android piracy forced Dead Trigger to become a free game

Those dirty, stinking pirates have claimed another victim in highly-rated zombie shooter Dead Trigger. Following rampant piracy of the $0.99 game, developer MadFinger Games decided to do away with the price and make Dead Trigger completely free. There really wasn’t much else that could have been done according to a Facebook update published a short while ago.

“Even for one buck,” MadFinger explained, “The piracy rate is soooo giant, that we finally decided to provide DEAD TRIGGER for free.”

Despite the 99-cent price tag, Dead Trigger was widely distributed on illegal sharing sites. That led to the game being dropped to be completely free within two weeks of its release. When an important update that added several new features – including new weapons, zombies, environments, and game modes – the price of the Dead Trigger dropped.

MadFinger originally intended to make the game “available for as many people as possible,” which is why it sold for $1 rather than the $5 people typically pay for a game of this quality. To make up for the difference, the developer included in-app purchases that provides shortcuts towards getting better weapons and gear. Unlike most freemium titles, these purchases are not necessary to win the game. The hope is that newcomers to Dead Trigger will make IAP upgrades as a way to shorten the process and still generate revenue for the developer.

The Dead Trigger situation is a sad state of affairs on the piracy problem on Android -

AT&T Considering Billing App Developers so That Customers Get Free Data With Games

The Wall Street Journal reports from the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona that AT&T is looking into how it can bill app developers for data charges instead of its customers. According to the WSJ, John Donovan, the man in charge of AT&T?s network and technology, spoke about the company?s plans in an interview in Barcelona.

Quote:

"A feature that we’re hoping to have out sometime next year is the equivalent of 800 numbers that would say, if you take this app, this app will come without any network usage," he said.

The move would apply particularly to movie streaming apps or data-hungry games that currently eat up huge chunks of a customer?s data allowance, and would obviously be very popular with the customer, although the WSJ adds that some consumer groups are not so happy, saying that this could skew the app market in favour of those app developers and publishers who can afford to pay AT&T to include data allowance in their apps, leaving poorer indie developers at a disadvantage.
