Major League Gaming and Sony Mobile want mobile game players to do more than just shoot and destroy things when playing their favorite titles; they want players to shoot and destroy each other’s high scores.
Sony announced today that it is launching the Xperia Mobile Gaming Arena, a competitive network for select games that creates leaderboards and competitions with cash prizes. The Xperia Mobile Gaming Arena tracks player performance in a particular category – kills or wins, for instance – and then compares that against others who have entered the arena.
Gameloft’s Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is the first game to incorporate the XMGA. Players can participate by linking their MLGid and Gameloft Live ID and then start the multiplayer mode in Modern Combat 3 on any device capable of running it. Stats are automatically uploaded MLG, and the winner of the first competition running from May 3 – 20, 2012 will receive $1,000 USD. (Official rules and terms are available here.)
